I am Hannah and I am the Volunteer Coordinator here at Substances Support Scotland. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead the development of our positive pathway.
We are working towards creating a pathway that empowers individuals to build confidence, recognise and use their existing skills, and feel supported to learn and develop new ones along the way.
Getting to know me
I have worked and studied within the field of psychology and mental health for the past eight years. I have always been curious about the ‘why’ behind behaviour, understanding the relationship between our biology, our environment and the many factors that influence our thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
I followed this curiosity to further education, initially completing an undergraduate in Psychology.
During my studies I began to volunteer at my local hospital, visiting patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a local high school, supporting students experiencing adversity at home. Volunteering grew my confidence supporting others. It allowed me to apply theory to real-life situations and deepened my motivation to pursue a career in health and social care.
After graduating, I worked as a Community Link Worker – a role I absolutely loved. I learned so much about the range of services and support available, as well as the barriers to accessing support and the challenges that services face daily. I thrived building relationships with colleagues and clients and knowing that I was playing a role in creating positive change in people’s life gave me a fire in belly.
I was inspired to continue learning and specialising, which led me to complete a Master’s in Psychological Therapies and train as a Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology. Through this, I delivered both one-to-one and group therapy within NHS and third sector settings.
Why this role
Following my recent graduation, I spent time reflecting on the question: what next?
I knew I wanted a role where people are at the centre, where I could use my skills and experience to build relationships, support confidence and development, and be part of an organisation I genuinely believe in.
The Volunteer Coordinator role at Substances Support Scotland brings all this together for me. The organisation delivers high-quality support that is continually reviewed and adapted. It listens to its community, values partnership working, and is committed to ongoing growth and improvement. This person-centred, holistic approach strongly reflects my own values and the direction I want my career to take.
Looking ahead
Volunteering, and our Positive Pathway, can offer individuals a space to grow in confidence, develop skills, and feel a sense of purpose and belonging. I am excited to be part of that journey and to work alongside the individuals and communities we support
I have a passion for people and their stories, and a belief that everyone is an expert in their own life. When given the right tools - and the belief from others - we can build healthier, happier communities.
