Our values and approach
Our Approach
You only Need to ask once
We’ll help you find the right support, whether that’s through our services, another organisation or a combination of both.
We look at the whole picture
Alcohol and drug use rarely exist in isolation. We consider the wider factors affecting wellbeing, including mental health, trauma, housing, relationships, finances and physical health.
Better Support Through Partnership
We work closely with NHS services, local authorities, housing providers and community organisations to ensure support is joined up and centred around your needs.
Your Voice Shapes Our Services
People with lived and living experience help shape how we design, deliver and improve our services, ensuring they remain relevant, responsive and person-centred.

At Substances Support Scotland (SSS), we believe that every person’s journey is unique. There is no single pathway to recovery, wellbeing or positive change, which is why our approach is built around listening, understanding and responding to what matters most to each individual. Our services are person-centred, trauma-informed and recovery-focused, helping people identify their strengths, overcome barriers and achieve their own goals. We recognise that lasting change happens when people are empowered to make informed decisions about their lives and are supported in a way that respects their experiences, choices and aspirations.
We work on a No Wrong Door principle, ensuring that anyone who reaches out to us can access support, guidance or connection to the right service at the right time. Whether someone is seeking information, counselling, recovery support, outreach services, training or practical assistance, we aim to make support accessible, welcoming and free from judgement. We understand that people engage with services at different stages of their lives and recovery, and we are committed to meeting people where they are, both physically and emotionally. Early intervention, harm reduction and prevention are central to our approach, helping people access support before challenges escalate and ensuring barriers to engagement are reduced wherever possible.
Our work is grounded in the understanding that alcohol and substance use can be linked to a range of wider challenges, including mental health, trauma, physical health concerns, housing difficulties, social isolation, unemployment and family pressures. We therefore take a holistic approach, supporting the whole person rather than focusing solely on substance use. By addressing the factors that can impact wellbeing, we help people build stability, strengthen resilience, reduce harm and create meaningful, lasting change in their lives.
Lived and living experience is central to who we are. We value the insight, expertise and perspectives of people who have faced similar challenges, ensuring that our services remain relevant, responsive and grounded in real experiences. We actively involve people in shaping, developing and improving our services, recognising that the voices of those with lived experience are essential in creating effective, compassionate and impactful support.
We do not believe in working in isolation. Meaningful change happens when organisations, communities and people work together. SSS takes a collaborative approach to everything we do, building trusted partnerships across the public, private and third sectors. Through effective partnership working, shared learning and joint problem-solving, we create more responsive services, strengthen recovery pathways and ensure people receive seamless support throughout their journey. We are committed to being an active partner in the communities we serve, recognising that collaboration is essential to improving lives and creating lasting change.
Above all, we believe in treating everyone with compassion, dignity and respect. We focus on building trusted relationships, reducing stigma and creating environments where people feel safe, valued and heard. Through evidence-informed practice, lived experience, partnership working and a commitment to continuous improvement, we support individuals, families and communities to reduce harm, improve wellbeing and achieve positive, lasting recovery outcomes. We continually learn from the people we support, the evidence we gather and the partnerships we develop to ensure our services remain effective, responsive and measurable in the impact they deliver
